Girls Leadership Academy of Wilmington welcomed its inaugural class of 100 sixth grade girls Monday.

WILMINGTON — The school buses rolling up Monday to Girls Leadership Academy of Wilmington might as well have been on a red carpet.

Peeking out the bus windows, girls dressed in royal purple uniforms saw a crowd of hundreds dotted with dignitaries — Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo, University of North Carolina Wilmington Chancellor Jose Sartarelli, a handful of county commissioners — all cheering for them. As the girls filed off the bus and high-fived principal Laura Hunter, photographers snapped their pictures.
