WILMINGTON– A hundred sixth grade girls will start school Monday at North Carolina’s first single-gender charter school.

The Girls Leadership Academy of Wilmington, or G.L.O.W., is a sixth through twelfth grade school that enrolls students from disadvantaged neighborhoods.

The girls will have the same core teachers for their middle school years and a leadership advisory teacher that stays with them from sixth to twelfth grade.

The goal is to help the girls develop strong relationships with their teachers.

“Girls are traveling through adolescence. There are a lot of things that they have to navigate in that journey, and it’s not just about academic success, it’s about social and emotional well-being and mind body balance,” said G.L.O.W. Principal Laura Hunter.

The school’s curriculum focuses on science, technology, engineering, arts and math.
