College Bound Program
Working with low income sixth grade girls, their families and faculty, Jahleese Ladson builds high school, college and career readiness Ms. Ladson is former Program Manager for Girls Education with the Young Women’s Leadership Network.
The vision statement for GLOW Academy greets you when you walk in the front door: She Will Graduate, Go to College and Succeed in Life. Earlier in November, that vision came closer to reality with the hiring of Jahleese Ladson, the school’s first College Bound counselor. Ms. Ladson is the former program manager for girls’ education with the Young Women’s Leadership Network, of which GLOW Academy is an affiliate. College acceptance is a pillar of the YWLN model, with graduates attending college at a rate four times greater than their peers. At GLOW Academy, Ms. Ladson is working with students, families and college admissions counselors to optimize college placement and maximize financial aid resources.
For now, she admits that sixth graders aren’t quite sure how to engage in conversations about college. Rather this first year, and even second, will be dedicated to helping girls recognize the skills they are developing now, and the self-awareness they are cultivating, is what prepares them for high school success and options thereafter. “Organization, conflict management, and a self-understanding of skills, talents and interests are important to student success,” she explains. To the girls, she says: “First we’ll work on becoming awesome middle schoolers, so we can be awesome high schoolers and graduate with real options.” Ms. Ladson, will also provide opportunities for career consideration and visits to college campuses, allowing GLOW students to better imagine a future with higher education and employment. And after the new year, GLOW students will attend College and Career Readiness events, as part of their weekly leadership class.
All Parent University meetings will take place monthly on Tuesday evenings from 6 – 7 pm. GLOW will provide childcare and dinner.
