The Summer Leadership Academy will serve as a unique program for New Hanover County’s rising 5th grade female students. The summer program will provide local students with an introduction to activities on University of North Carolina Wilmington’s (UNCW) campus and in the community while introducing them and their parents to Girls Leadership Academy Of Wilmington’s commitment to changing young women’s lives through education and opportunities. Our first Summer Leadership Academy students were awarded scholarships to fund their attendance in educational and enrichment programs. Six young women attended UNCW’s Marine Quest Camp, Engineering Camp and Science Camp.
The Summer Leadership Academy summer learning camps were funded the summer of 2014 and will be funded through 2019 by a grant from the Hearst Foundation. UNCW Youth Programs will be the core program element of the 2017 Summer Leadership Academy. Dr. Sue Kezios, Director of UNCW Youth Programs, has customized the Marine Quest, Engineering Expectations and Rocket Girls summer youth programs for GLOW.
The Summer Leadership Academy will become a component of the summer programs for the school’s students and will continue to serve as a preliminary recruitment pipeline for future students.
Comments from counselors and students:
Teaching the girls about marine science was like opening up a whole new world to them. These girls were blown away by some of the topics we introduced them to. Throughout the week, the girls would talk about all of the marine life around them they have never noticed.
These students were able to experience things they may have never had the chance to do. Each day made a lasting impression on the girls, and throughout the week they kept reiterating how thankful they are for this program. At the end of each day, the girls would discuss what type of scientist they wanted to be, and that was what I found really rewarding.
The girls were fascinated by the topics we would cover each day, and their unrelenting enthusiasm was apparent through their active involvement, motivation to learn and positive attitudes.
What will you remember most about MarineQuest camp?
The day we all met. Fun activities, counselors, and friends!
What was your favorite thing about camp?
Everything! We learned new things.
